Job Purpose:
The GBMSM Regional Health Promotion and Risk reduction Worker promotes sexual health and HIV/HCV risk reduction among Gay, Bi, Men who have Sex with Men (GBMSM) in the region of Hamilton, Halton Haldimand, Norfolk, and Brant. For the purposes of this job description the use of the term “men who have sex with men” (MSM), includes men who identify as gay, trans, two spirit and bi-sexual. The Regional GBMSM Program goals are to reduce the number of MSM who are not aware of their HIV or Hepatitis C status, to reduce new infections, and to implement positive prevention programing working together with GBMSM who HIV or HCV Positive are, or co-infected.
Working in collaboration with the provincial Gay Men’s Sexual Health Alliance, and our community partners, the incumbent is responsible for developing, coordinating, and delivering GBMSM education, training, community-based and online outreach to promote health and reduce risk. This program plans and coordinates activities throughout Hamilton, Halton, Haldimand, Norfolk and Brant.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Partner with local community organizations to increase their capacity to respond to MSM’s HIV-related needs
- Providing consultation and advice to local organizations as requested
- Facilitating or leading local initiatives to serve as a catalyst for the integration of HIV into programs and planning
- Providing HIV-related information to service providers in the community, at local community events, forums, or conferences
- Distributing resource materials and other HIV prevention tools (safer sex materials, information, condoms, etc.) to community agencies serving MSM
- Providing HIV-related referrals to local community organizations and strengthening the relationship between the local HIV sector and other MSM -serving sectors
- Work collaboratively with other agency priority population programs, such as harm reduction services
- Monitoring and evaluation through consistent use of the web-based Ontario Community-Based AIDS Service and Evaluation records management system and other program related reporting requirements
- Communications and social media outreach
- Professional development
- Other areas as approved by the Manager of Priority Populations Programs and Support Services and/or Executive Director
Qualifications:
- People living with HIV are strongly encouraged to apply.
- Post-secondary education in social services, health/human services, community development, or combination of education and equivalent experience
- In-depth knowledge of HIV/AIDS and hep C with focus on MSM prevention strategies within the current context
- Previous experience organizing and leading education events geared to social service agencies, community partners, etc. and community discussion forums
- Demonstrated experience of implementing community development models and peer-based programming connected to sexual health education and/or behaviour change focused awareness initiatives
- Knowledge of and connection to the 2SGBTQ communities in the Hamilton, Halton, Brant, and Haldimand-Norfolk regions
- Excellent organizational skills and diligence
- In-depth knowledge and ability to manage social media and engage in online and face to face community outreach
- Flexible to challenges as they arise and the ability to remain calm under pressure
- Ability to manage confidential/ sensitive information with discretion and maturity
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in conflict and other situations that may require tact, diplomacy, and discretion
- Competence in collaborating with people who may experience mental health and substance use challenges
- Demonstrated proficiency with computer systems, (i.e., Word, Excel, Outlook)
- A valid driver’s license and access to a reliable insured vehicle for work related duties

What We Offer:
This is a full-time, on-site, permanent (35 hours/week) position with the Positive Health Network.
